LLB Final Year Elective Modules Relevant in Practice

LLB Final Year Elective Modules Relevant in Practice The UNISA Law Degree is considered a professional law qualification and the program is a minimum of 4 years to completion entailing the completion of 40 semester subjects. The degree is fully accredited with the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA).

Importance of Elective Modules in the Final Year

Final year of LLB program contains both core and elective modules. Those elective modules give students an opportunity to focus on certain aspects of law in which they would like to work in the future. They also help the students to research relatively focused areas of the law more practically which thus assists them in securing jobs relatively easily. Choosing the right electives increases your chances of getting a job, and ensures that you are ready for legal practice.

Elective Modules for Practical Relevance

1. Commerc ial law
The study of Commercial law is very crucial in relation to business and more business transactions. This particular module ranges from contracts to sales, agency, and corporate law. This is quite useful for those who expect to work as corporate lawyers, in house counsels and legal advisors to businesses.

2. Criminal Law and criminal procedure

Criminal Law and procedure are concerned with the substantive law and the processes related to criminal jurisprudence. This elective is also important for individuals whose career aspirations are in the defence of criminal suspects, who are prosecutors or work in the criminal justice system. It concerns practice and theory of trial and litigation, evidence and criminal practice.

3. Family Law

Family Law is all about matters that are spouse and child related both legally and otherwise; for instance, marriage, dissolution of marriage, custody of children and rites of adoption. It is this module that is most applicable to those whose career paths lead to family law practice. Students are prepared to deal with difficult and emotionally sensitive cases without loosing their focus or respect.

4. Intellectual property law

Intellectual property (IP) Law deals with the law in relation to the rights of the owners of the creations of the mind whether the inventions, designs, literary and artistic works and symbols, names and images used in commerce. This elective is particularly important for emerging IP law practitioners because we live in the times where innovation and creativity are held in high esteem. It focuses on practical skills for counsel on IP enforcement and protection.

5. Human Rights Law

Human Rights Law is the study of the law existing to protect the fundamental, basic human rights of every person. This module is important for those who wish to work for social justice, want to work in NGOs, or want to study and work in International law. It equips participants with skills of l
