SASSA Child Grant Application Requirements

Who Qualifies for the SASSA Child Support Grant?

To qualify for the child support grant, applicants will have to meet the following requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee as the primary caregiver.
  • The caregiver and child must be residing in South Africa.
  • The applicant must be the child’s primary caregiver.
  • The child must have been born after 31 December 1993.
  • Applicant and spouse must pass the means test.
  • The child should not be cared for in a state institution.

Required Documents for SASSA Child Support Grant Application

The required documents are:

  • A certified copy of the applicant’s ID and a certified copy of the child’s ID or birth certificate.
  • Certified evidence of spousal relationship or marital status (e.g., marriage certificate, divorce decree, death certificate).
  • If married, a certified copy of the spouse’s ID.
  • If income is declared, proof of income.
  • If no income is declared, an affidavit attesting to this fact is needed.
  • Evidence that the applicant is the child’s primary caregiver.
  • School attendance proof for the child (although the application will still be processed even if not attached).
  • A certified copy of the applicant’s bank statement as confirmation of banking details.

Registration of SASSA Account

  1. Visit the SASSA services web portal.
  2. Click on the “Register A New Account” button to access the SASSA services.
  3. Check “I Agree” and click Apply button for approving South Africa’s Registration Consent.
  4. Fill in the “Client Registration” e-form with the required personal information.
    • Citizenship (South African citizen/permanent resident/refugee)
    • Identity Number (Your ID number would be your Login Username)
    • ID document type (ID document/temporary ID)
    • Confirm your ID number
    • Choose User Title (Mr/Mrs/Miss)
    • Provide your Surname
    • Provide your Full name
    • Provide your active Email address
    • Choose a password (must meet certain criteria; strong)
    • Confirm your chosen password
    • Provide cellphone number (10-digit South African number)
  5. After putting all the information, click on the “Register Me” button.

Your account is created and you will soon receive a confirmation message with either an OTP or a link to your cell phone number to complete your registration. And when your account is ready you can continue to apply for social grants.

After entering your details, you’ll likely need to verify your email address through a link sent to your email to activate your account.
  3. Sign In
    • Once your account is set up and activated, return to the SASSA homepage and use your new username and password to log in. This step will grant you access to your SASSA dashboard where you can manage your information and apply for grants.
  4. Choose ‘Apply for a Grant’
    • In your account dashboard, navigate to the section labeled “Grants,” where you’ll find various grant options available. Select the “SASSA Child Support Grant” to proceed with your application. This section may also offer brief descriptions of each grant, helping you ensure that you select the right one.
  5. Fill Out the Application Form
    • Carefully fill out the online application form for the SASSA Child Support Grant. This form will require detailed information about both the applicant and the child, including names, birth dates, ID numbers, and other personal information. It’s crucial to enter accurate and truthful information to avoid delays or rejections of your application.
  6. Upload Your Documents
    • After completing the form, you will need to upload the necessary supporting documents. This will include digital copies of your ID, the child’s birth certificate or ID, proof of residence, and any other documents specified in the eligibility criteria. Ensure that each document is scanned clearly and is legible, as unclear documents can lead to processing delays.
  7. Submit Your Application

What Happens After Submission?

  • You will receive a confirmation email of your application.
  • SASSA will review your application and might ask for more details if necessary.
  • You will be informed about the outcome within 30 days, and if successful, the first payment should be made within 60 days.
