How to Check Your Marital Status

1. Check Your Marital Status Online

The online platform is a straightforward and convenient way to check your marital status from anywhere. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Department of Home Affairs’ official website.
  2. Click on the “Check Your Marital Status” link.
  3. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number in the provided field.
  4. Click the “Submit” button.

Important Note: The website may experience high traffic, causing delays or technical issues. If you encounter any problems, try refreshing the page or checking back later.

2. Verify Your Marital Status via SMS

If you prefer a quick and accessible method, the Department of Home Affairs also offers an SMS service to check your marital status. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the messaging app on your cellphone.
  2. Type the letter “M” followed by your ID number (e.g., M 5001010050080).
  3. Send the SMS to 32551.

You will receive a response with your marital status and the date of your marriage (if applicable) within a few minutes.

Cost: R1 per SMS, which will be charged by your network service provider.

3. Visit Your Nearest Home Affairs Office

If you prefer in-person verification or if you encounter any issues with the online or SMS services, you can visit your nearest Home Affairs office. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Bring your original South African ID book or Smart ID card.
  2. Request to check your marital status.
  3. A Home Affairs official will assist you in verifying your status.

The common categories of marital status

  1. Single: An individual who has never been married or has not entered into a legally recognized partnership.
  2. Married: A person who is legally united in marriage with another individual.
  3. Divorced: An individual who has legally ended their marriage through a divorce or dissolution process.
  4. Widowed: Someone whose spouse has passed away, resulting in the termination of the marriage.
  5. Separated: A status indicating that a married couple is living apart but has not legally dissolved their marriage.
  6. Civil Partnership or Domestic Partnership: A legally recognized relationship similar to marriage, available in some jurisdictions, often granting similar rights and responsibilities as married couples.
