How Many Subjects Are Needed For Matric In South Africa?

To earn a National Senior Certificate (NSC), students are required to take a minimum of 7 subjects during their Matric year. Out of these seven subjects, they must pass at least 6 in order to qualify for the certificate.

The subjects are divided into compulsory and electives, giving students both a core foundation and the flexibility to choose areas of interest. So, when you try to understand how many subjects to pass matric, we have given a breakdown of the subjects as below:

Compulsory subjects:

Students must take four compulsory subjects, which form the core of their Matric curriculum. These subjects include:

  • Two official languages (one as home language and one as first additional language)
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation.

Elective subjects:

In addition to the compulsory subjects, students are required to choose three elective subjects from a wide range of subject categories as follows:

  • Business Studies
  • Geography
  • Accounting
  • Physical Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Economics
  • History
  • Agricultural Sciences

What Are The Requirements To Pass Matric?

There are four pass levels you can obtain to pass Matric. You must gain the following marks to pass:

Bachelor’s Degree Pass Diploma Pass Higher Certificate Pass National Senior Certificate Pass
  • A minimum of 40% in your home language
  • A minimum of 50% in four subjects
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects
  • A minimum of 40% in your home language
  • A minimum of 40% in four subjects
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects
  • A minimum of 40% in your home language
  • A minimum of  40% in two subjects
  • A minimum of 30% in three other subjects
  • A minimum of 40% in your home language
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects
  • A minimum of 30% in the remaining subjects
  • You can fail one subject
