Check SASSA Old Age Grant Status
To check the status of your Older Persons Grant, follow these simple steps:
- To check your SASSA Status visit: https://sassacheck.com/
- Enter your South African ID Number or 13-digit bar-coded identity document (ID).
- Provide the cell phone number you used when submitting your SASSA Old Age Grant application.
- Click the ‘Submit’ button to send your request to our database.
- Our web portal will process your application for the SASSA Old Age Grant status.
- The status results for your grant application will be displayed.
- Important Notice: SASSA has come out very recently, saying that every form of Social Grants will be incremented effective 1 April 2023. For example, the Child Support Grant, the Disability Grant, Grant In Aid, Care Dependency Grant, War Veterans Grant and Older Persons Grant will be leveled at R2080 (between 60 and 74 years) and R2100 (for over 75 years grants).
What if your application is not approved?
In the event that the application is disapproved, SASSA will issue a letter indicating the reason for the unfavorable results. In case you find the results unwarranted, you may be allowed to reach out to the Minister of Social Development at the National Department of Social Development. Note that the SASSA appeal must be lodged within 90 days after you received the notification that your application was unsuccessful.
How much is the SASSA Old Age Grant?
Should your SASSA Old Age Grant Application be favorably reviewed, you will start receiving payments from the date you made the submission. SASSA pays R2,200 per month to Old Age Grant recipients aged 75 or older and R2,180 per month to those under 75. These payment amounts reflect the updated SASSA increased grant payments for 2024.
What are the payment methods for the SASSA old age grant?
SASSA provides the grant through the following SASSA payment methods.
- Cash at designated retail stores and pay points on a scheduled payday.
- Electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (please note that the bank may charge for this service).
- Payment transactions into your SASSA card, support ATM funds withdrawal and transfer money to your bank account.
- Institutions such as old age homes and health care centres.
- Note: If you are unable to collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office or grant someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf.
When will SASSA older person grant be reviewed?
SASSA decided to review your grant annually, and priority evaluation is based on the income you declared during your application through the means test. You will be notified three months in advance of the review or the due date for submitting a life certificate (proof of being alive). If you receive your grant through a bank, institution, or procurator, you are required to complete a life certificate at the SASSA offices manually.

Your SASSA grant may lapse or cease if:
- You pass away.
- You are admitted to a state institution.
- You do not claim for three consecutive months.
- You are absent from the country.
- Please note: If you are admitted to an institution with a state contract for your care, the social grant is reduced to 25% of the maximum grant amount. This reduction begins in the fourth month following your admission and will be reinstated immediately upon your discharge.
