How to Get SARS Tax Number in South Africa

The South African Tax Identification number Issued by SARS as to identify their Tax contributor this number are given to all tax payer either Business man or Employee.

How to Get SARS Tax Number

First, check to see if you have a tax number already

Your employer may have registered you in the past. If this is the case, you would have been issued with a 10-digit tax reference number from SARS and you would have an IT150 Notification of registration that states your reference number.

You can also check your IRP5 or payslip from your employer as your tax reference number may appear there.

If you think you *might* have a tax number but aren’t sure, you can phone SARS at 0800 00 7277 to check.

Or you can request it on the SARS SMS Channel by sending an SMS to SARS on 47277 from your mobile device.
-TRN (Space) ID number/Passport number/ Asylum Seeker number

How To Get SARS Tax Number Via SMS

A Notice of Registration (IT150) will reflect your tax reference number.

You can request a notice of registration through the following channels:

  • eFiling:  Once logged in to eFiling click on the “Notice of registration” icon on the ‘Home’ page to obtain your IT150.
  • SMS:  Request the issuing of the IT150 (Tax reference number) by sending an SMS to SARS on 47277.
    • TRN (Space) ID number/Passport number/ Asylum Seeker number

PLEASE NOTE:

SARS will not provide your tax number to another person unless the person is your tax practitioner or has power of attorney to conduct your tax affairs.

28 June 2021 – Taxpayers can now request specific Personal Income Tax related services by sending an SMS to SARS on 47277. The following additional tax related services are offered to taxpayers via their mobile device. These services can be accessed with or without data/airtime:

  • Request an eBooking appointment
    • Booking (Space) ID number/Passport number/ Asylum Seeker number
  • Confirmation request to determine whether to submit a (PIT) tax return 
    • File (Space) ID number/Passport number/ Asylum Seeker number
  • Request the issuing of the IT150 (Tax Registration Number)
    • TRN (Space) ID number/Passport number/ Asylum Seeker number
  • Request Account related queries (balance statements) and/or provision of Statement of the Account (SOA)
    • Balance (Space) ID number/Passport number/ Asylum Seeker number

How do I download SARS tax?
You can easily install the SARS MobiApp from the App Store (for Apple devices), Google Play Store (for Android devices) or the Huawei App Gallery. On the SARS MobiApp you can register, complete, save and submit your 2024 return (coming soon), as well as returns from previous years.
Can a foreigner get a tax number in South Africa?
