SASSA Grant Increase 2025: Know Expected Amount ,Annual Budget and Eligibility The Sassa Beneficiaries are Expected to get Increase amount in to their Grants starting 2025 acording to the The 2024 Mid-Term Budget Statement (MTBS) delivered by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.

SASSA Annual Budget Report

The South African Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, presented the annual budget on 21 February 2024 and noted that the SASSA grants have increased. These grants are intended to assist 19 million South African citizens in their financial management. These grants from the government of South Africa will still be given as long as its able.

Also, the National Treasury of South Africa disclosed that the SASSA annual appropriations will grow from R217.1 billion (2023/24) to R259.3 billion until the fiscal year 2026/27. Disbursements will commence on April 1, 2024, but the amount of SASSA R350 SRD is not part of this SASSA’s annual budget allocation. The reason for the delayed rollout of the SASSA R350 SRD grant is as a result of talks that are still ongoing between the two national departments. In addition to the above, the total number of SASSA grant recipients inclusive of the COVID-19 SASSA SRD grant, is expected to rise from 18.8 million in the year 2023/24 to 19.7 million in the year 2026/27.

The Department of Social Development (DSD) falls under the Non-Profits Organizations Act 1997 whose provisions outline the sector’s mission and operations. Moreover, SASSA is governed by the Social Assistance Act 2004 which provides for various social grants available to persons or couples. Furthermore, women’s rights are outlined in the Old Persons Act 2006, while the same is true for children in the Children’s Act, (2005). On the other hand, the Treatment for the Prevention of Substance Abuse Act (2008) addresses the issue of drug abuse among minors.

Below is a summary of the anticipated budgetary increases or decreases for the coming years:

  • 2025/26: R246 billion (7.5% decrease)
  • 2026/27: R259 billion (6.9% increase)

The projected reduction from 2025 onwards may mean fewer funds for social grants, especially the temporary Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which has been extended annually since 2020.

The Expected SASSA Increase Amount Across All Grants

According to current prevailing estimations, its expected that whenever the SASSA grant is revised in the year 2025, there might be an increase of 5% for majority of the key grants. This would be a little higher than the previous 4.8% increase in the previous year, but might still not be able to suffice the needs of the inflationary costs.

In this forward looking statement, let us examine the variations in the expected increases in the grants:

1. Old-Age Pension (Aged 60 to 74)

At present it stands at R2,190, but it is anticipated that the grant will increase to R2,290 in April 2025, with a subsequent increase of R10 to R2,300 in October.

2. Old-Age Pension (Aged 75 and Older)

In the case of beneficiaries who are 75 years or older, the grant is provided at R2210. It is assumed that there will be an increase of 5% to this amount in April, which will make it R2,310, plus another increase of R10 which will bring it to R2,320 by the month of October.

3. Disability and Care Dependency Grants

The present amount for both Care Dependency Grant and Disability Grant is pegged at R2,190. However, it is likely that the two will rise to R2,290 come the month of April, followed by another rise to R2,300 in the month of October.

4. War Veterans Grant

Also at R2,190, the War Veterans Grant is expected to increase to R2,290 in April, with an additional R10 bump to R2,300 in October.

Predicted 2025 SASSA Childcare Grant Increases

Childcare-related grants, which make up about 65% of total SASSA expenditures, are also likely to see a modest 2025 SASSA grant increase. Here’s a breakdown of the expected adjustments:

  • Child Support Grant: Projected to increase from R530 to R560 in April 2025, with no additional increase expected in October.
  • Child Support Top-Up Grant: Likely to rise from R250 to R265 in April.
  • Foster Care Grant: The Foster Care Grant is expected to see a larger increase from R1,180 to R1,800 in April, reflecting the higher costs associated with foster care support.
