Location: South Africa

About the SANS Killie Campbell Bursary Programme

The SANS Killie Campbell Bursary is specifically designed for postgraduate students pursuing research in the field of History, with a strong emphasis on South African history. While the bursary is open to research on any topic related to the history of South Africa, priority will be given to research focusing on the history of KwaZulu-Natal.

Fields Covered

The Killie Campbell Bursary supports students who are working on a postgraduate dissertation or thesis in any historical topic related to South Africa. Students are expected to have a clear focus on South African history, with preference given to KwaZulu-Natal-related topics. This makes it an ideal opportunity for students with a passion for studying the rich history of this province, including its people, events, and cultural heritage.

Value & Payments

The bursary is valued at R25,000, although the final amount awarded will be determined by the selection committee. The funds will be disbursed in two equal installments of R12,500 each:

  1. The first installment will be paid in September 2025 at the SA National Society’s monthly meeting.
  2. The second installment will be provided once the student’s supervisor has submitted a satisfactory written report on their progress.

This payment structure ensures that the bursary not only assists students financially during their studies but also encourages them to stay on track with their research and meet the required academic milestones.

Selection Process

Applicants will be subject to a selection process to determine the recipients of the bursary. This may include an interview with the selection committee, which will be held either in person or via electronic platforms such as Zoom. The committee will assess each applicant’s academic background, the relevance and quality of their proposed research topic, and their potential to contribute to the field of South African history.

In addition to the interview, bursary recipients will be expected to present a brief outline of their research topic at one of the monthly meetings of the South African National Society. Upon completion of their dissertation or thesis, recipients will need to provide a soft copy of their work for publication on the SA National Society’s website. This offers a unique opportunity for students to have their research showcased to a wider audience, further enhancing their academic and professional profile.
